Approximately half of all women and children experiencing homelessness are fleeing domestic violence. More than 330,000 rapes occur each year in Texas, which includes over 226,000 children and 104,000 adults — National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center. In 2005, the Austin Police Department and Travis County Sheriff's Office reported 884 sexual assaults. That same year, 9,757 investigations of domestic violence were reported. The incidence of domestic violence in Texas is twice the national average. Low income-women experiencing domestic violence must often choose between homelessness and abuse. In 2006, More than 11,000 cases of alleged child abuse or neglect were reported, or about 30 cases of alleged abuse or neglect per day. Nearly 500 children were removed from their homes upon completion of investigation (2006). Travis County’s prevalence rate of confirmed victims among Texas’ largest counties is second only to Bexar County. Since 2000, the number of fatalities from child abuse has remained stable, from 6 to 9, with 8 in 2006. The number of children in substitute care has increased 56 percent in the decade since 1997, with an average yearly increase of more than 6 percent. Department of Family Protective Services foster care expenditures for Travis County totaled more than $15.8 million in 2006. |
