Board Internship Program
The Austin Involved Board Internship Program, produced in partnership with Mission Capital, is designed to create nonprofit board members who are prepared to serve as community leaders. Board Internship students participate in two levels of learning: classroom instruction focused on the application of best-practices in a nonprofit board setting, and experiential learning under current board members at local nonprofits. The purpose of the Board Internship Program is to create the most well prepared board members to serve our community.
We will begin accepting applications this spring for 2016
Curriculum: Topics covered by experts in the field to include: the nonprofit cycle & board responsibilities, how to identify your cause, as well as governance & fiduciary responsibilities.
Session 1: July 1: 6-9pm
Session 2: July 8: 6-9pm
Session 3: July 15: 6-9pm
Session 4: July 22: 6-9pm
Participants: We will be selecting 20 participants for this year’s program.
Time Commitment: The program requires approximately 12 hours over four (4) educational sessions. Sessions are from 6-9pm. Participants will also receive real-world perspective through a few outside activities such as observation of a board meeting and mentorship with a current board member of local nonprofit agency. The outside activities will be scheduled according to your personal availability.
The success of the program depends on the full commitment of each participant to attend all program sessions, arrive on time and participate fully. While we recognize that emergencies do arise, more than one session absence will result in dismissal from the program.
Cost: $150 which includes all materials and dinner at each classroom session.

Here’s how you can help: Lend us one of your board members! We would like to pair up a participant with one of YOUR current board members to share insight and provide guidance as they start their journey. What does this entail?
- We would like for our participant to attend a board meeting(s) as a visitor with their board member. Giving participants a peek into the work of your nonprofit.
- Mentor and participant should meet at least 1-2 times but the extent of the mentorship can be determined between them.
- If there is a mutual interest and benefit, participant could serve on a subcommittee or work on a board project.

Please note: Participating boards are under no obligation to ask participants to serve on the board upon completion of the program. But if it works out to be a match — great!
